DAY 7: MASAI MARA NATIONAL GAME RESERVE

You will not want to miss a single moment of your day in the Masai Mara, so we suggest an early wake-up call this morning.  The early morning game drive often offers you the very best chance to see an excellent variety of wildlife on the move in the cool of the dawn.  In between you will have the option of visiting a local Masai Village where you will be able to interact and learn more about the colorful culture of this nomadic pastoralist community.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is in the south western part of Kenya and forms part of the greater eco-system that encompasses the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The Masai Mara is one of the best known and most visited reserves in Africa. The park is surrounded by concession areas and tribal lands of the Masai tribes people. These are unfenced from the Mara and act as a buffer zone for the National Park and form part of the migration area. The Masai Mara consists of open savannah, rolling grasslands and undulating hills. July to September sees the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle coming from the plains of the Serengeti. Driven by dry conditions in the Serengeti and led by the lightning and thunder to the north, huge herds of mammals cross the Tanzanian border and rivers to reach the Mara's grasslands.

DAY 9: MARA NORTH CONSERVANCY

Wake up before sunup and have some muffins and coffee, before you take a morning game drive. You'll see how still and quiet the Bush is at dawn and watch it begin to stir as the sun comes up. You'll return to camp for a late breakfast; then you'll have the option to take a safari, on-foot, to a local Masai Village, where you'll be exposed to Masai traditions and nomadic culture or just visit a local community project supported by the camp. Head back to camp for lunch followed by an afternoon at leisure, and later an evening/night game drive.

Mara North Conservancy is one of the most densely populated wildlife areas within the Masai Mara Ecosystem. The great Oloololo Escarpments borders the conservancy to the south and attracts the rains; crucial for the red oat and spear grassland areas. Throughout the year great numbers of herbivores as elephants, giraffes, zebras, Thomson’s gazelles and impalas seek the area for water and gracing. Always closely followed by the big cat predators. At the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment the Mara River flows through the conservancy area with families of huge hippos and large crocodiles resting lazily in the waters. In the northern corridor the scenic Lemek Hills make an important wildlife refuge, particularly to a pack of highly threatened African wild dog. It is also the home to the Leopard Gorge; world famous due to its significance as birthing and maternity ground for the big cat predators. Five prides of lions amounting to 56 family members, seven cheetah and at least six leopards has made the conservancy their homeland area.
